Pre-debut

Karina was a former ulzzang who was recruited by an SM casting director and became an SM trainee in 2016. Karina participated in Taemin's "Want" music video in February 2019 and also served as a dancer for the song's promotional stages. She participated alongside EXO's Kai in 'Beyond DRIVE - The all-new TUCSON', a joint virtual display between Hyundai Motor Company and SM Entertainment, on November 1, 2020.

SM Entertainment said on October 27, 2020. Karina was revealed as the second member of aespa by Entertainment.

GOT the beat debut: 2021

Karina introduced the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards alongside some 4th generation idols with a collaborative special dance performance. Karina will make her debut in the first unit, GOT the Beat, of the female project group, Girls On Top, on December 27th. Winter, BoA, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon of Girls' Generation, and Wendy and Seulgi of Red Velvet will all make their debuts. They will play their debut digital single "Step Back" during the SMTOWN Live 2022: SMCU Express@Kwangya online event on January 1, 2022, prior to its official release on January 3, 2022.

 GOT the beat Comeback: 2022-2023

On December 23, 2022, Sport TV News reported that GOT the Beat will make their first comeback in January 2023. A few hours later, SM Entertainment confirmed the reports. On December 29, 2022, it was announced that GOT the Beat will release their first mini album, Stamp On It, on January 16. The CD contains six songs.
